Nice writing on strife.  I think of Olson’s wonderful line about the poetic foot — a foot is to kick

with.  Strife is conflict which is necessary for the health of writing.  Those who run po-biz, as they

always have, want no conflict.  They opt for the noblesse oblige of dismissal.

Mary Oppen approached me about where George’s papers should be placed.  (At Middlebury

College I was curator of a collection in American literature.)  I advised UC San Diego or SUNY

Buffalo.  They should not go to Harvard or Yale since all his life George was opposed to Harvard

and Yale.  The papers are at Yale.

I did not see the article Lucas Klein wrote that Hollander commented on.  Klein was one of my

best students in my contemporary am lit class.  At Yale he led the fight to organize graduate

students.

Best,

Bob
