With sadness the news came that a true giant of witness, testimony, form, and conscience, Juan Goytisolo, passed away in his beloved adopted home of Marrakech. We began corresponding in the early 1980s and saw each other at every opportunity. His openness about his own sexuality, the clarity of his politics, and his vigilance to safeguard the true hybrid spirit of al-Andalus in a Spain hellbent on purity earned him the opprobrium of many. And he was at the forefront of changing the ways a novel could be written. He was finally recognized by receiving the long overdue Premio Cervantes in 2014. I was honored when he wrote a preface to a book of mine and I wrote about him variously. Expect at best a cursory and possibly cautionary obit from our so-called paper of record.
