Literature is weird: An interview with Jorge Luis Borges, which begins with the great writer praising the neo-fascist Argentinian dictators (murderers of tens of thousands and many more disappeared), calling them “true gentlemen,” while referring to their civilian opponents as “scum of the earth.” Borges explains that Argentina will not be ready for democracy for “another one-hundred years…maybe five hundred.” Smiling charmingly, Borges finishes this opening exchange with a call for the execution of the Marxist philosopher Regis Debray.
